This kit makes three styles of rolled sushi-small size for single filling (hoso-maki), large for multiple fillings (futo-maki) and heart-shaped sushi, perfect for Valentine’s Day and special occasions. Sushi is more than just raw fish; it combines vinegar-seasoned rice with raw, smoked or cooked fish/seafood, a wide variety of cooked or fresh vegetables and pickles into a myriad of shapes and sizes. It is beautiful to look at and delicious to eat. One of the most popular sushi is rolled sushi (maki-zushi) made with seasoned sushi rice and a filling and wrapped in a seaweed sheet (nori). It is shaped into rolls, cut into bite-sized pieces and served with Japanese horseradish (wasabi), pickled ginger (gari) and dipped in soy sauce. Maki-zushi is fun to make, aesthetically beautiful and delicious, with a wide variety of fillings. Here are some suggested fillings to use in your rolled sushi: Watercress, Asparagus (parboiled), Carrots (parboiled and cut into thin strips), Green beans (parboiled), Avocado, Mushrooms, Spinach (parboiled, water squeezed out),Cucumber (seedless is best), Japanese pickled vegetables, Takuwan (pickled daikon radish), Kanpyo (Japanese bottle gourd), Abura-age (tofu, sliced thin, seasoned and fried), Pickled ginger, Tamago (Japanese sushi omelet), Flying fish roe or other fish roe, Tuna (sushi-quality raw tuna), Smoked salmon or other smoked fish, Surimi (crabsticks) or cooked lump crab, Sesame seeds (black or white).
