Ever since I could remember my family made homemade ice cream for Thanksgiving, Christmas and always for my birthday. My dad’s parents always made homemade coffee ice cream and my moms parents made homemade vanilla or chocolate ice cream. I was always partial to chocolate when I was a child but as I grew older and into my teenage years I developed a love for coffee ice cream.
I still remember my grandparents with their old wooden bucket filled with ice sitting either in the garage or on the back porch churning away the ice cream. My job was to every 10-minutes make sure the ice didn’t jam the machine and if it did I was to scoop some rock salt on the ice to melt it so the machine would continue to turn. One year the machine was stuck and I tried to get it to turn however the lid popped off and some rock salt and ice got into the ice cream mixture. Needless to say that was a disaster.
To this day I continue this tradition of making ice cream on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Some times I will make it for a friend if it’s a special occasion. It never fails that when Thanksgiving and Christmas rolls around I always think of my grandparents and all the wonderful memories. This is one of those traditions I will continue in honor of my grandparents. My ice cream always turns out good but never as good as the homemade ice cream they use to make.
